Choose the sessions that are most relevant to your role, your organisation and your professional development.

The only additional cost is the Membership Essentials online course, which is $129 including GST.

For NZSAE members:

Learning Circles + CAAM enrolment + Assessment = included with your membership
Membership Essentials = $129 including GST

Non-members are also welcome to work towards CAAM. A small registration fee applies when attending individual NZSAE Learning Circles.

What happens when you enrol?

Once you complete this enrolment:

your CAAM record will be created

you will receive confirmation that you are enrolled in the pathway

you can begin registering for the Learning Circles you need

you will be able to record and track your Learning Circle progress

we will provide information about Membership Essentials and the CAAM Assessment as you progress

You do not need to complete CAAM in one year. Work through the pathway at a pace that suits you and take advantage of Learning Circles as relevant topics are offered.

Already attended NZSAE Learning Circles?

If you have previously attended NZSAE Learning Circles that may contribute towards your CAAM requirements, tell us when you enrol so these can be checked against your record.

Important

Enrolling in CAAM does not automatically register you for Learning Circles.

Learning Circles remain open to the wider NZSAE community and are registered for separately.

Once you have enrolled in CAAM, simply select the Learning Circles you want to attend and register for each session in the usual way.

Ready to begin?

Complete the registration details below to enrol in the Certificate in Applied Association Management pathway.

Succession planning (Learning Circle) (10 September 2026)

Succession Planning

Leadership & Strategy Learning Circle

Succession planning is about much more than replacing a Chief Executive, Board Chair or senior staff member when they leave. Done well, it protects organisational knowledge, builds future capability and helps an association continue confidently through periods of change.

For associations, this can be particularly important. Teams are often small, specialist knowledge may sit with only one or two people, and changes at Board or executive level can have a significant impact on continuity.

This Learning Circle will explore practical ways to identify critical roles and knowledge, reduce organisational dependency and prepare for both planned and unexpected leadership transitions.

Featured Speaker

Topic: Succession Planning
Speaker: To be confirmed

The session will begin with practical insights and experience from our featured speaker, followed by an off-the-record peer kōrero where participants can discuss their own succession challenges and learn from approaches being used across other associations.

What you will take away

Practical ideas to help you:

identify the roles, relationships and knowledge critical to your association

reduce reliance on individual staff, volunteers or Board members

build future leadership capability

prepare for Chief Executive and senior leadership transitions

strengthen Board and office-holder succession

retain institutional knowledge when people leave

prepare for both planned and unexpected departures

create succession arrangements appropriate to the size of your association

The focus is on practical action — not creating another plan that simply sits on the shelf.

CAAM

This Learning Circle counts towards the Leadership & Strategy practice area of the Certificate in Applied Association Management (CAAM).
Learn more about CAAM →

Online meeting

This session will be delivered via Zoom. Registered attendees will receive the meeting link with their confirmation and reminder communications.

Understanding the Member Journey — and the Moments That Matter (Learning Circle) (24 September 2026)

Understanding the Member Journey — and the Moments That Matter

Member Engagement Learning Circle

A member’s experience with an association is shaped by much more than joining and renewing. From their first enquiry through to events, communications, professional development and everyday interactions, there are moments throughout the member journey that can strengthen — or weaken — their connection with the organisation.

This Learning Circle will explore how associations can better understand the member journey, identify the moments that matter most and create a more deliberate and consistent member experience.

Featured Speaker

Topic: Understanding the Member Journey — and the Moments That Matter

map the key stages of your member journey

identify the moments that have the greatest impact on member experience

recognise gaps or friction in the member experience

better connect onboarding, engagement, communications and renewal

identify opportunities to personalise the member experience

From AI Experimentation to AI Strategy (Learning Circle) (08 October 2026)

From AI Experimentation to AI Strategy

Digital Tools & Technology Learning Circle

Many associations have begun experimenting with artificial intelligence, but using individual tools is very different from having a clear organisational approach to AI.

This Learning Circle will explore how associations can move from ad hoc experimentation towards a more deliberate AI strategy — identifying where AI can add genuine value, where human judgement remains essential and how to introduce AI responsibly across the organisation.

Featured Speaker

Topic: From AI Experimentation to AI Strategy
Speaker: To be confirmed

The session will begin with practical insights and examples from our featured speaker, followed by an off-the-record peer kōrero where participants can share what they are already doing with AI and discuss where they go next.

What you will take away

Practical ideas to help you:

identify where AI could create meaningful value for your association

move beyond individual experimentation towards an organisational approach

prioritise practical AI opportunities

consider appropriate policies, safeguards and responsibilities

build confidence and capability across your team

determine where human judgement and oversight remain essential

Creating Professional Development Members Will Actually Pay For (Learning Circle) (22 October 2026)

Creating Professional Development Members Will Actually Pay For

Engagement, Events & Experience Learning Circle

Thursday, 22 October 2026

Professional development can be an important part of an association’s member value proposition and a valuable source of revenue — but only when it meets a genuine need.

This Learning Circle will explore how associations can develop professional development that members value enough to invest their time and money in, from identifying the right topics and formats through to pricing, delivery and demonstrating value.

Featured Speaker

Topic: Creating Professional Development Members Will Actually Pay For
Speaker: To be confirmed

The session will begin with practical insights and examples from our featured speaker, followed by an off-the-record peer kōrero where participants can share what is working, what is not and how professional development could be strengthened within their own association.

What you will take away

Practical ideas to help you:

identify the professional development members genuinely need

test demand before investing in new programmes

The CEO–Chair Partnership: Getting the Relationship Right

Leadership & Strategy Learning Circle

The relationship between a Chief Executive and Board Chair can have a significant influence on the effectiveness of an association.

When the relationship works well, governance and management responsibilities are clear, communication is open and both parties are able to focus on their respective roles. When it does not, confusion, tension and unnecessary operational involvement can quickly follow.

This Learning Circle will explore the practical foundations of a strong and effective CEO–Chair partnership.

Featured Speaker

maintain appropriate boundaries between governance and management

create effective communication and meeting rhythms

manage disagreement constructively

The Disengaged Member: Re-engaging Members Before They Leave

Member Engagement Learning Circle

Members rarely become disengaged overnight. Often there are early signs — declining participation, unopened communications, reduced event attendance or simply less interaction with the association.

This Learning Circle will explore how associations can identify disengagement earlier and take practical action before a member reaches the point of deciding not to renew.

Featured Speaker

Topic: The Disengaged Member: Re-engaging Members Before They Leave
Speaker: To be confirmed

The session will begin with practical insights and examples from our featured speaker, followed by an off-the-record peer kōrero where participants can discuss approaches to identifying, understanding and re-engaging less active members.

What you will take away

Practical ideas to help you:

recognise early signs of member disengagement

identify which engagement measures are worth monitoring

better understand why members become less active

create targeted re-engagement approaches

reconnect members with relevant value and opportunities

AI Agents, Automation and the Association Workforce

Digital Tools & Technology Learning Circle

Artificial intelligence and automation are beginning to change not only how individual tasks are completed, but how work itself is organised.

For associations with small teams and growing expectations, AI agents and automated workflows could create significant opportunities — but they also raise questions about roles, skills, oversight and where people add the greatest value.

This Learning Circle will explore what these technologies could mean for the future association workforce.

Featured Speaker

Topic: AI Agents, Automation and the Association Workforce
Speaker: To be confirmed

The session will begin with practical insights and examples from our featured speaker, followed by an off-the-record peer kōrero where participants can discuss how automation and AI may change roles and ways of working within their own organisations.

What you will take away

Practical ideas to help you:

understand the emerging role of AI agents and automation

identify repetitive work that could be automated

consider how staff roles may change as technology develops

determine where human skills and judgement remain critical

prepare teams for new ways of working

Building Community Between the Events

Engagement, Events & Experience Learning Circle

Events can create strong connections, but an association community cannot rely solely on the few occasions each year when members are physically or virtually together.

This Learning Circle will explore how associations can create more opportunities for members to connect, contribute and belong between formal events — building a stronger sense of community throughout the year.

encourage member-to-member interaction

build communities around shared interests or challenges

use digital and in-person channels more effectively

create reasons for members to participate beyond formal events

What Should We Charge? Pricing Membership, Events and Services

Finance, Risk & Operations Learning Circle

Pricing is one of the most difficult decisions associations make. Charge too little and programmes can become financially unsustainable. Charge too much and participation or perceived value can suffer.

This Learning Circle will explore practical approaches to pricing membership, events, professional development and other association services — moving beyond simply increasing last year’s price by a percentage.

Featured Speaker

understand the true cost of delivering an activity or service

consider value as well as cost when setting prices

test members’ willingness to pay

review member and non-member pricing

Leadership & Strategy Learning Circle

Effective boards do not happen by accident. Building the right mix of capability, experience and perspectives requires deliberate recruitment, strong induction and ongoing development.

For associations, where directors are often elected or volunteer their time, this can require a careful balance between democratic processes, member representation and the skills the organisation needs around the Board table.

This Learning Circle will explore practical ways to strengthen Board capability from recruitment through to induction and ongoing development.
